snow days.

January 28, 2009

An unexpected ice and snow storm hit us yesterday. Dear friends were shut in with us – we cooked, ate, drank, played monopoly, watched movies, and cuddled closely. I immediately called my mother when I saw the snow this morn – she always had this sign in our kitchen that said “Pray for Snow.” She is wonderful and I always think of her warmth and love when it snows.

In case, you too, are facing snow days, or perhaps just seasonal blues here are a few fun things:

Children’s Book: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats – which I just found a gently loved copy of at the thrift for one quarter!

Music: Bon Iver – Run a hot hot bath, turn on Bon Iver, watch the snow fall out the window, and experience a taste of heaven!

Reading: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle – I just finished this classic children’s novel about adventure, time travel, and the battle between good and evil. It is a fast, captivating read that accesses the imagination and faith in wonderful ways!

Foods: Vegetable Soup, Linguine with Tomato Garlic Sauce, Brussels Sprouts (here is a yummy way to prepare them: golden crusted brussels sprouts), no bake cookies, steel cut oats with banana, walnuts, and brown sugar!

Drink: Yogi Ginger Tea. Point Belgian White Beer (a light wheat beer flavored with orange peel and coriander)

I also suggest playing board games, watching any movies you have lying around, inviting over the neighbors, or having a dance party!

Enjoy your winter days!
